OFFICER HELPS WOMAN FLEE BURNING HOUSE

Edition: Tuesday, May 08, 2012

A Chickasha police officer on Monday helped a woman escape safely from her burning home.
Officer Matthew Schoolfield was only a few blocks away when he learned that the fire department had been dispatched to a structure fire in the 2400 block of S. 16th St.
"Upon arrival, the officer noticed the rear of the residence was already engulfed in flames," said Maj. Elip Moore, interim police chief.
Moore said several neighbors were standing at the front of the house and were yelling inside to see if anyone was home.
"Schoolfield quickly accessed the situation and because he did not know if anyone was inside, made the decision to make sure," Moore said. "He entered the residence yelling to see if anyone was inside."
Moore said Schoolfield found the home filling with smoke, making visibility poor.
"He continued to yell for anyone as he could no longer see and he started to back track," Moore said. "At that point, Schoolfield thought he heard something, so he got down low so that he could see better. He saw a figure coming from the rear of the residence and he escorted the female subject from the residence."
The woman, who was identified as Shonda Deambrose, was treated by fire department personnel.
Moore said Schoolfield remained on the scene assisting the fire department by keeping traffic away from the scene.
The fire department is investigating the cause of the fire.
